Setup

  • ARENA requires maximizing Quest’s guardian to a 10m x 10m (33ft x 33ft) square. This can be a bit tricky, especially in rooms smaller than 14m x 14m as guardians are sometimes rotated. Here’s a quick start guide on how to set up your play area for ARENA:

    1. Find space: a completely empty 10m x 10m (33ft x 33ft) play area, preferably with some extra room on the sides (12m x 12m or 40 x 40ft is ideal). A basketball court, tennis court, gym, or hall is perfect.
    2. Go stand in the center of your play area. Mark the spot with tape if you’re going to play with two players in the same space.
    3. Face the direction you want your square guardian to be oriented in. Pick a very specific focal point if you’re going to play with two players in the same space. (On a basketball court face the hoop, on a tennis court face the middle of the net, etc.)
    4. While standing in the center of your play area, start the guardian setup. Make sure you’re staring in the chosen direction when you Confirm the floor level or click Redraw. This is the moment when you lock the center point and orientation of your square guardian! (The grid you see on the floor might not align, but that’s OK.)
    5. Draw the maximum possible play area, which is a 10m x 10m (33ft x 33ft) square. To ensure quality tracking data, walk close to the edge of the square while drawing the outer boundaries. If the completed guardian is at an angle, return to the center of your play area and repeat steps 4-5.
    6. If you’re going to play with two players in the same space, carefully repeat steps 4-5 with the second Quest. You want both headsets to have identical guardians.

    Here’s a video showing how it’s done

Now fire up ARENA and follow the instructions to align the game with your play area. If you’re going to play with two players in the same space, it’s crucial to fine-tune the playing areas!

  • For ARENA single-player, you don’t need Wi-Fi. To play multiplayer, matchmaking requires Wi-Fi and the internet connection and network must be fast enough to ensure your headset isn’t laggy. When playing with two players in the same location, the gameplay is peer-to-peer, so a fast internet connection isn’t crucial. However, it is important that the two Quests have a good connection to the same network, with minimal latency.

  • We advise covering the ’face sensor’ of Quest to ensure it doesn’t go to sleep between matches. This will prevent Quest from accidentally forgetting or rotating the guardian. The sensor is located on the inside of the headset between and somewhat above the two eye lenses. You can simply cover it with a piece of tape.

  • If you want to play multiplayer, make sure you and your adversary have the same version of Space Pirate Trainer DX installed. Update (both) to the latest version if necessary.

Play Area

  • In order to play ARENA, you’ll need a completely empty 10m x 10m (33ft x 33ft) play area, preferably with some extra room on the sides (12m x 12m or 40 x 40ft is ideal). A basketball court, tennis court, gym, or hall is perfect.

  • Because the lenses in your headset can be permanently damaged by exposure to direct sunlight, Meta strongly advises against using Quest outdoors. Tracking of the controllers will also not perform well in bright sunlight. Some play outside at dusk, but after a while have the opposite problem of needing to bring light into the environment as the tracking cameras struggle in the dark too.

  • Please don’t.

  • Smaller spaces don’t allow the gameplay we are chasing with ARENA. We don’t anticipate players having a 10x10m space in their houses; this is a game made for sporting areas like basketball courts, tennis courts, gyms, or halls. For smaller spaces, we have Space Pirate Trainer SOLO and VERSUS.

  • We launched ARENA to take full advantage of Quest’s tracking capabilities in 2021, and look forward to exploring larger play areas as future devices allow.

Multiplayer

  • Currently, ARENA supports one or two players.

  • It is possible to play ARENA with friends, but not with random people online. The problem is that in many cases you’d end up with someone just trying out ARENA in a space that isn’t right for it. And it’s very easy to troll other players. Maybe we’ll come back to this in the future when we can make sure that players have a nice experience.

  • Yes. SPT DX uses the Meta Accounts system for multiplayer, so you have to have two Meta Accounts, one on each device, mutually following each other. If you own both Quests, you don’t need to buy two copies of the game. You can share SPT DX with additional accounts on your Quest. Learn about it here

  • Yes. It’s called co-located ARENA and it’s awesome. Hearing your opponent trying to be quiet, knowing they are in the same room, but not sure where …

  • If players get too close, they get a warning.

  • Definitely! Especially if you have two Quests. It’s super fun to play tournaments, passing the headsets after each match. You’ll be happy with the break between rounds ;-) To get the spectators involved, you can cast the Quests to a screen (with Chromecast) so everyone can see what the players are experiencing in VR.

  • Sure. You can play single-player against AI drones, or multiplayer against friends online.

Various

  • Players have a shield in one hand, and a gun in the other. You can swap between left and right-handedness in the Settings menu (click the menu button on the left controller).

  • You can select from five different pre-made maps, or build custom maps of your own.

  • Space Pirate Trainer DX is currently only available on Meta Quest. (You can play Space Pirate Trainer on Meta Quest, Pico, Oculus Rift, PlayStation VR, and Windows Mixed Reality.)

  • We currently don’t have a commercial license for SPT DX available. We are looking into possibilities there — you’re free to experiment with ARENA & VERSUS in the meantime. Commercial licensing for Space Pirate Trainer (single-player) is handled by our friends at Vertigo Games, who you can contact via arcades@vertigo-games.com.

  • Currently, we don’t have a public timeline for future updates.
