No less than 267 riders from 26 countries participated in the qualifications for the 540INDY invitational. Shout-out to all of you, and a special thanks for the heartwarming messages we got. Our panel of experts boiled it down to 8 finalists. A challenging task; the level of riding was insane! But only the very best are invited to showcase their skills live in front of a top-tier jury of pro snowboarders. The finals are broadcast on YouTube on May 4.

the course

For this year’s invitational, we decided to switch up the course design with a hybrid concept that showcases as many aspects of snowboarding as possible. The course features street-inspired rail setups, backcountry terrain, and massive jumps with transition and butter options mixed in at the bottom.

The start section features a short cliff drop to get speed into the first rail section, with street-inspired stair sets, handrails, and concrete ledges.

The features branch outwards towards a wider second rail section with even more line choices.

The second rail section is a plaza-style layout with rooftop lines, wallrides, transfer options, and more street-inspired features.

Next, we switch things up with backcountry terrain including spines, pillows, and cliff drops giving you speed into the jumps.

The first jump feature has three options with a regular jump takeoff in the middle and two transition takeoffs on the sides.

Jump two also has a regular jump option in the middle through a channel in a shark fin-shaped butter feature that can be ridden from the sides as a wallride as well.

The final jump section includes the X feature from last year with a slightly different setup. There’s a thin takeoff in the middle to gap straight over and transition takeoffs on the sides to either gap over or jib the X.

the scale of awesomeness

The judges’ appreciation for the runs will be expressed as a number on the Scale of Awesomeness, a scale of 0-540. The scale is not a perfect line; it is more of a curve. So 360 is farther from 540 than 180 from 360.

Judging is done in good conscience and is completely arbitrary.
